Sensory Friendly Every Day
The Franklin Institute can sometimes seem a little overwhelming. It can be crowded, loud, and bright. That's why we are pleased to offer a few ways to make our museum more comfortable for kids and adults with a variety of sensory differences.
Sensory Alert Maps – will guide you through certain devices or experiences in each exhibit that may have high levels of stimulation. The guides will give you helpful tips as you explore.
Marvel: Universe of Super Heroes – sensory tips:
- Plan your visit for a generally less busy time, like weekday afternoons or evenings.
- Bring your noise-reducing headphones or borrow a pair from the Information Desk.
- There is a large space to take a break right after The Hulk section.
- If you get overwhelmed in the Dr. Strange section, ask any staff to show you to a pass through.
Sensory Backpacks – will be stocked with helpful tools like noise-reducing headphones, sunglasses, fidgets, and weighted toys to help reduce sensory stimulation while exploring exhibits. Backpacks are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis from the Information Desks in the Atrium or Lobby on the second floor. Backpacks should be returned to one of these desks as well.
Quieter spaces – if you need a quieter space inside the museum, try exhibits like Amazing Machine, Space, or Franklin Foodworks (not during the lunch hour rush).
Return visit voucher – if you find the museum too overwhelming and need to leave within 30 minutes of purchasing your tickets, please stop by the Box Office to receive a voucher to try again on another day.
Sensory Friendly Sunday
During Sensory Friendly Sundays, our exhibits will be modified to provide an opportunity for people on the autism spectrum and with a range of differing abilities to experience all The Franklin Institute has to offer. Our trained staff and volunteers will be on hand to answer any questions you have and, if necessary, direct you to a quiet space that provides a chance to cool down and take a break.
